Young Tamworth Phoenix American Football stars win national silverware

The Tamworth Phoenix under-17 American Football team capped off another successful season with British National Leagues silverware, finishing as runners up at the plate playoffs tournament held in Sheffield on September 3rd.

To reach the tournament final, the Phoenix defeated the London Warriors and no.1 seed Leeds Assassins. But coming up against the tournament’s champion team for the last four years in the Highland Wildcats, the battling Phoenix team fell just short of being crowned champions.

“Knowing these weren’t going to be easy games, we battled for the wins to get to the final,” said Phoenix rookie Tom Hart. “It’s been a great first season playing American football and Tamworth Phoenix was the perfect place to go. I shall carry on playing as long as possible and shall stay part of the Phoenix #PHamily no matter where I go!”

With over half this year’s squad being newcomers to the sport of American Football, match and coaching experience showed as the Phoenix won five out of its last six games to secure a playoff place and finish in the United Kingdoms’s top sixteen under-17 teams.

“I’m so proud of these young men not only today, but the season long journey.” Said Phoenix under-17 head coach Michael Fearn. “We’ve battled as a team all the way, picked ourselves up when we were down to find a way together to overcome adversity. We have some real future stars here at Nix Youth and it’s been an honour to share that journey.”

Defensive players Ewan Lockwood and Louis Gallagher, who recently began pursuits as  student-athletes with the Filton Pride American Football Academy, stood out on defense for the Phoenix. A comprehensive team performance for the Phoenix offense was led by running back Tom Hart, the only player to score a touchdown against the tournament champion Highland Wildcats.

With a number of players graduating from the under-17 team, the Phoenix will be looking to welcome new players for the 2017 season and again be one of the 40 five-a-side under-17 American Football teams competing across the United Kingdom.
