Tamworth Phoenix set for big Independence Day weekend

The American Independence Day weekend will see American Football action continue both on and off the field for the Tamworth Phoenix, with July 4th itself (Saturday) involving an exciting opportunity to experience the sport in Tamworth.

Joining in with the Landau Forte Academy, Greenacres ‘Stars & Stripes’ Summer Fayre (1pm-4pm, LFA Greenacres, Levett Road, Amington, Tamworth, B77 4AB), Phoenix players and coaches will be offering a taster of American Football, welcoming all to ask questions about the sport and check out what it involves.

Gaye Smith, Deputy Chair of the Landau Forte Academy PTA, is particularly looking forward to the opportunity for children of all ages to take part in a sport that the Phoenix are striving to give children more chances to enjoy.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to on Saturday,” said Smith, speaking of how her own children aged six and eight enjoyed a previous taster of American Football with the Phoenix. “I don’t think a lot of Tamworth are aware that we actually have an American Football team.”

The event follows the first Tamworth Superstars event, held on June 20th at Wilnecote High School to promote the region’s minority sports clubs; Mercia Judo Club, Tamworth Spartans Volleyball Club and the Tamworth Phoenix. A successful day of demonstrations and competitions, a product of a previous meeting between the clubs at the Mayor’s Sport Function, saw all in attendance getting a chance to try a new sport.

“There was good training, good instruction. Even though it rained it was a good laugh, everyone got involved and everyone had a great day. I think it’s a great way to just see the potential in some people and see what it can grow into.” Said Niall Earnshaw, a rookie in his first season of American Football with the Phoenix who took part in the event.

Fireworks will be also provided on the Sunday of the Independence Day weekend, with the Phoenix adult and youth teams in action in away fixtures. The senior team will be looking to bounce back after last week falling to their first defeat of the season, with the youth team (U17) travelling to Doncaster to face the Mustangs, Manchester Titans and Pennine Panthers in a tournament.

Having narrowly lost out to the Sheffield Predators (2-4) by a score of 12-6, the Phoenix adult team (6-1) will now look to get back to the winning ways of the 6-0 start to the season. Now with a more narrow lead in the British Premiership North Division standings, re-establishing a sense of momentum will be key in preparing for a two-week finale to the regular season involving a showdown with the current No. 2-ranked Lancashire Wolverines (5-1) at the Atherstone Sports Hub (Sun July 26th, CV9 1LX) before an away trip to the current No. 3-ranked East Kilbride Pirates (4-2) (Sat, Aug 1st).

But this Sunday’s away fixture against the Coventry Jets (1-5) (Sphinx Sports and Social Club, Coventry, CV1 3WA, 14:30 KO, £2 admission with under 16’s free) will be a stern test for the Phoenix. In the return fixture of the season opening 17-0 victory over the Jets, the Phoenix will face a dangerous offense that has scored the most points out of any team in the lower half of the Premiership North standings and last week notched 20 points in a spirited 35-20 defeat to the East Kilbride Pirates.

“Last Sunday’s loss against the Predators was a disappointment, but this week will define us, how we bounce back, how we regroup,” said Tamworth Phoenix chairman James Hossack. “I’m also really looking forward to the Greenacres Stars & Stripes Summer Fayre this Saturday afternoon, supporting the great cause of the PTA at what will be a great event and speaking to everyone about Phoenix American Football.”

All interested in attending the Greenacres Stars & Stripes Summer Fayre (B77 4AB) and the Tamworth Phoenix’s remaining home fixture of the season at the Atherstone Sports Hub (CV9 1LX) are reminded that entry for both events is free and that the whole family is welcome.
