With the dust settling on an undefeated first half of the season, the Tamworth Phoenix (5-0) stand as the top ranked team in the American Football Premiership North division.
The division’s top spot was held onto with exciting victories over close rivals Lancashire Wolverines (4-1) and East Kilbride Pirates (3-2), 17-10 and 32-27 respectively. 17-0, 21-8 and 43-0 victories over the Coventry Jets (1-2), Sheffield Predators (0-4) and Yorkshire Rams (1-5) rounded off the 5-0 start for the Phoenix.
“We’ve had an amazing year so far. It’s been a lot of hard work from everyone involved in the club, both on the field and those who run the team in the background, so we are all very proud of what we’ve achieved so far. We’re also made up of a group of people that don’t want to stand still, they want to keep improving and make this the best season it can be.” Said head coach Martin Hilton.
He continued: “We’ve got tough matches ahead with teams that will be looking for revenge, fighting to keep their season going and the chance of going into the knock out matches at the end of the year if we can keep winning. We won’t be looking too far ahead, but we’ll keep playing with the same intensity and effort and hopefully the good results will keep coming.”
Heading into what will be a competitive second round of division matches, in which a division title and playoff berth will be up for the grabs, the Phoenix will look to build on the successful start. With the culmination of the season featuring clashes with the division rival Lancashire Wolverines (home) and East Kilbride Pirates (away), the team will be keen to establish a sense of momentum.
The matchup with the Lancashire Wolverines, July 26th (Sun) is one of two remaining opportunities to enjoy Phoenix football at the Atherstone Sports Hub (CV9 1LX) over the rest of the regular season, with June 28th (Sun) seeing the Phoenix host the Sheffield Predators.
“It’s been fantastic at our new home at the Atherstone Sports Hub so far the season and the support has been awesome.” Said Tamworth Phoenix club chairman James Hossack. “The East Kilbride win was a great event. A huge thanks goes to everyone who came to watch, playing a big part in the game cheering the team on. We look forward to welcoming everyone who comes along in the future.”
Both the Wolverines and the Predators will be keen to avenge previous defeats to the Phoenix this season, but will be hard tasked to score points against a defense that has recorded the least amounts of points conceded in the North division and third least across British American Football’s two premiership divisions.
The Phoenix offense meanwhile, led by a trio of dangerous wide receivers in Ben Burslam (#11), James Hossack (#81) and Sam Rogers (#80), will look to continue in the scoring form of the team’s last two victories over the Yorkshire Rams and East Kilbride Pirates.
Another exciting development for the Tamworth Phoenix heading into the second half of the season comes off of the field, as the club is welcoming enquiries from all of those who may wish to help support the voluntary running of the club.
