Phoenix’s young stars ready for playoff spotlight and shot at Britbowl tournament

This Saturday will see a spectacular showing of American football action and a first for ‘Fortess Atherstone’, as the Tamworth Phoenix U17’s host the eight-team Northern Youth Playoff tournment,

It’s a noon start for Northern Playoff Tournament at the Atherstone Sports Hub (CV9 1LX).

The U17 age group’s exciting five-a-side edition of the game will see the eight teams battle it out through a three game knockout format, determining who claims the two spots up for grabs at this season’s Britbowl tournament on September 12th at Doncaster Keepmoat, West Riding of Yorkshire.

The No. 1-ranked Phoenix U17’s, with support from players and coaches from the Phoenix adult team, will welcome the Northern Conference’s seven other qualifying teams as well as spectators for a noon start at the Atherstone Sports Hub (CV9 1LX).

This season’s U17 team welcomed six rookies to the Phoenix programme.

With the top ranking, Phoenix U17 coach Ian Statham is aiming for nothing less than to qualify for this season’s Britbowl tournament and to get a shot at silverware.

“We got to the playoffs last year but got knocked out at the first stage, so we’re hoping to go one better this year and especially for those young men who will be moving onto next season’s new Phoenix U19 team.” Said Statham.

The tournament sees the higher seeds playing off against the corresponding lower seeds in the initial quarter-final round, with each team then advancing to the semi-final and ultimately the playoff final or playing for a final ranking after elimination.
