Young people are being offered the opportunity to be a part of the Tamworth Phoenix’s under-19 team, as the latest step of the programme’s forward-looking development will see the team relaunched to compete in the 2016 British National League season.
The relaunching of the team reestablishes a key part in ensuring the opportunity for participants to continue playing the sport of American Football regularly. The Phoenix last fielded an under-19 team up until 2012, a successful setup in which many participants thrived and went on to form a nucleus for the programme today.
“As a former youth player, myself growing through the system, it improves you as an adult in your working life, it improves your ambition and your goals. To grow that from such a young age, it’s a huge thing and we see that as a benefit. It’s giving back to the community and offering something more, which is really important to us.” Said Daniel Norgrove, Director of Operations for the Tamworth Phoenix.
With successful 2015 under-17 and adult team seasons having reflected the Tamworth Phoenix’s organisational commitment to supporting the pursuit of excellence, the programme’s committee and coaches will look to apply the same ethic to the under-19 team. With little time to spare until the season’s start in the spring, returning players have already begun preseason training in advance of welcoming their new teammates.
Having led the joint under-17/19 preseason sessions taking place on Sundays, Tamworth Phoenix coach Michael Fearn emphasised the importance of developing opportunities for young people to participate in American Football:
“The youth level is the whole foundation to not only Tamworth Phoenix, but the foundation to sport in this country in general. We’ve got some new faces down and we’re hoping that we can keep some more coming down to build on that.” Said coach Fearn.
In addition to the Sunday under-17/19 training sessions at Wilnecote High School, the Phoenix have plans for additional taster sessions shortly after American Football’s biggest day, Super Bowl Sunday, takes place in February. To provide all the latest information, a dedicated Tamworth Phoenix Junior team Facebook page has been launched, where questions can be asked about joining the team and playing the sport.
