An experienced Britball player, Gary played for the team in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, before moving into coaching and giving back to the sport that he loves.

Gary will come on board as the Offensive Line coach for the Adult team and will be tasked with helping a young and talented group improve and fulfil their potential. Working under offensive coordinator Dan Smith, also a former offensive lineman, the foundation of the Phoenix offense for 2017 is in safe hands.

Head coach Martin Hilton had this to say about Gary’s return to the Phoenix:

“I’m delighted that Gary has decided to join the Phoenix program. He has been here before as a player and I remember the way he played with passion, technique and effort on the Offensive Line. I know he will bring a lot of that to his coaching, but he has a lot more to offer as well. I spoke to guys that have worked with him as a coach already and he works hard to do things the right way – focused structured training, giving helpful feedback and building relationships with his players. I can’t wait for him to meet our young OL prospects and start helping them to develop and I hope the Phoenix can do the same for Gary as he takes his next step as a coach.”

Speaking to Gary, he revealed some thoughts about the Phoenix and the approach he brings to the position:

“Seeing out my last two seasons of playing with the Nix I know how ambitious and hardworking this team is so it will be great to be part of this 2017 focus.”

“I believe I bring experience, accountability and an understanding of true Offensive Linemen. For me being an Offensive Lineman is truly a unique position played by complex, unique, mentally and physically tough individuals. In my experience of playing for 27 years, it’s a position largely overlooked or misunderstood by most teams and coaches so I think having someone who genuinely does understand, value and enjoy the challenge of developing a bunch of guys to reach their individual and unit potential will really help the offense and the team.”

Coach Hodgen and the Tamworth Phoenix are welcoming all offensive line prospects, young and more experienced, to join the team. This Saturday will see the team host an open session to allow all comers to both get a taste of the sport and see what the #PHamily is all about. The session is free to attend and more details can be found on Tamworth Phoenix Facebook and Twitter:
