‘Nix gameday: Phoenix looking to withstand the heat of end of season crunch time

Looking to move one step closer to securing a division title and a place in this season’s playoffs, the Tamworth Phoenix face off against the Lancashire Wolverines this Sunday in the last home fixture of the regular season at the Atherstone Sports Hub (CV9 1LX, 2.30pm KO).

Returning to action after a two-week break following a strong performance in a 38-0 away victory over the Coventry Jets, the Phoenix will be looking to bounce back from the setback of a 12-7 defeat to the Sheffield Predators last time out at the Atherstone Sports Hub.

It’s a must-win match for the Lancashire Wolverines, who face potential elimination from both the division race and playoff contention with a loss. Coming off a narrow 16-10 loss to the division rival East Kilbride Pirates and having previously been handed their only home defeat of this season by the Phoenix, the visitors will be as intent as ever on coming away with a victory.

“We’re aware of the implications of this game, but right now we’re just concerned with beating a very capable opponent in the Lancashire Wolverines. Our last game against the Wolverines was close, so this should be a good one for the fans to come and watch at our great home venue of the Atherstone Sports Hub as two playoff contenders battle it out.” Said Tamworth Phoenix club chairman James Hossack.

The top two teams from each Premiership division, North and South, advance to the playoffs, with each division champion being rewarded with a home fixture in a semi-final game representing a chance to play in this season’s Britbowl championship game.

With matches against the closest challengers in the Premiership North, it’s all to play for in the final weeks of the regular-season for the current No. 1-ranked Tamworth Phoenix (7-1), with the match-up with the No. 3-ranked Wolverines (6-2) and a regular season finale showdown away to the perennial division rival No. 2-ranked East Kilbride Pirates (Sat, Aug 1st).

Sat, Aug 1st will also see the Phoenix youth team (U17) host the Pennine Panthers, Leeds Academy and Leicester in a tournament competition at the Atherstone Sports Hub. Having another successful year with seven wins out of eight games so far, the team will be looking continue their good form at home. Players of all experience levels of American football are welcome to join the youth team and can get in touch via the team’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tamworthphoenixyouth.

With both the Phoenix senior and youth teams’ seasons coming to an end, Sunday’s culmination to an exciting first season of matches at the Atherstone Sports Hub provides a great opportunity for all the family to check out American Football and experience what the sport is all about with the Phoenix. Entry is free and all are welcome, with a bar at the Atherstone Sports Hub clubhouse and a BBQ after the game.

Phoenix adult team head coach Martin Hilton offered his thoughts heading into the big game:

“Sunday is a huge game for us. We’ve got two games left of the regular season, but we’re not looking past Lancashire who are a very good side and challenging us at the top of the division. Their loss last weekend will only make them more determined to get a result against us, but I’ve got a lot of confidence in the players to bring their excellent work in training to the game and get us the victory we need.”
