The Phoenix is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Fearn to the position of U17 head coach. After former head coach Andy Garratt stepped down at the end of 2015 the Phoenix committee knew there were big shoes to fill.
With six years of coaching under his belt and 3 years with the U17 Phoenix coach Fearn has been with former HC coach Garratt from the start. Originally taking on the role of QB coach, Fearn quickly rose through the ranks to become the U17 OC.
“There’s a lot of positive change in the organisation as a whole right now and it feels great to play such an important role in that change.” Coach Fearn said when asked about his appointment. “The Youth is the foundation to not only Phoenix but the sport as a whole in the UK. It’s a great responsibility but one that I relish. Nothing pleases me more than seeing these young men work hard, learn, enjoy then eventually graduate and go on to continue playing the sport.”
Coming off a very successful 2015 season which saw the Phoenix U17s lose out in their playoff tournament final coach Fearn will be hoping to continue the young squads rise through the Youth league.
Coach Fearn hopes to continue to increase player participations through getting the team out around the local area and developing himself and the U17 coaching staff. Which he and the committee believes will only continue the success of the players both on and off the field.
“Mike gives us continuity in the youth programme, and consistency of approach with the team.” Director of Performance Jason Scott said. “He impressed us with his knowledge of the game, organisation and passion. We’re excited to see how he progresses as the U17 head coach.”
The U17 team has a very strong support network through its player’s parents and that is also something coach Fearn is keen to keep and utilise. The Phoenix is extremely lucky to have such strong support and know that it is key to the teams continued success.
